CITE and FHWA Blended Courses - 2009

The Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE) eliminates the inconvenience of attending courses away from the office by providing "blended" courses through an interactive web-based format.

The fee for the course is $250 and students can register by going to the CITE web site. For more information, please contact Denise Twisdale, mztwiz@umd.edu or 301-403-4592.

The CITE and the FHWA Office of Safety have released the following interactive web-based courses.

    February - March 2009
Introduction to Telecommunications Technology - Instructor-led, Web-based ("Blended") Version

Description: Telecommunications is the backbone of all ITS applications. It provides the means for sending data, voice, and video information between devices. This course is a primer on telecommunications for the ITS professional with little or no formal training in telecommunications. With so many ITS projects now requiring a telecommunications aspect, this course is a must for project managers.
Target Audience: Public-sector Transportation Professionals including US DOT engineers, planners, project managers, and field staff, FTA Regional staff, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Specialists, and others as appropriate. Transportation professionals from state, regional, and local agencies would also benefit from participation in the course.

Description: This course emphasizes the importance of database design, use, and management to ITS. The module begins with a general description of databases and database management systems, including the relationships that exist among a database, a DBMS, and an application. Relational database tables, Entity-Relationship Models, and the role of metadata are discussed in detail. Finally, the module describes SQL, and explores the role of databases in data warehousing and Geographic Information Systems.
Target Audience: Transportation professionals who are ultimately responsible for the design, procurement, and operations of transportation systems that rely heavily on database management systems.
